Understanding key-terms

Coaching is a non-directive conversation, goal-oriented and future-focused process that aims to help individuals maximise their potential, overcome challenges, and achieve set goals. The coaching conversation places value on action. Two key questions are “What can you do to achieve this goal?” and “What are you going to do differently?”

Our strengths-based coaching approach aims to support, motivate and empower young people, fostering resilience, effective communication, action-oriented and positive mindset development towards their goal(s).

rrCoaching is rooted in our commitment to coaching with responsibility and reliability.

Evidence-based coaching refers to an approach that integrates scientific research, empirical evidence, and validated methodologies into coaching practices. It involves using techniques, strategies, and interventions that have been rigorously studied, tested, and proven effective through research and empirical data.

Character strengths refer to positive qualities possessed by all human beings – qualities with which we think, feel and behave- that contribute to our and others’ well-being. Research has found that we all have 24 character strengths identified in the VIA Classification.

Certain strengths come more effortlessly and align more naturally with an individual’s expression (signature strengths), other strengths emerge in specific circumstances when they become necessary (middle strengths), while there are strengths that are exhibited to a lesser extent or with less frequency (lesser strengths).

Example character strengths are: perseverance, love of learning, gratitude, perspective and hope.

Strengths based coaching focuses on identifying an individual’s inherent strengths and positive qualities, and encourages them to make use of these to design action plans towards achieving their goals, while developing emotional resilience and building their confidence.

The VIA Survey is a psychological assessment tool designed to measure an individual’s (18+) character strengths. VIA stands for “Values in Action,” and the survey is based on the positive psychology framework developed by Martin Seligman and Christopher Peterson. The VIA Survey identifies and ranks an individual’s top character strengths out of 24 universal strengths, such as kindness, perseverance, and creativity.

The VIA Youth Survey is an assessment tool designed to identify and measure the character strengths of young individuals (ages 8-17). It is based on the Values in Action (VIA) Classification of Strengths and Virtues and provides insights into a youth’s positive attributes and personal characteristics.

The survey typically requires about 10-15 minutes for completion, and participants receive their survey results at no charge upon finishing the assessment, while full reports can be purchased.

Yes, you can take the VIA test by yourself. The VIA Survey and VIA Youth Survey are designed to be a self-assessment tool that individuals can use independently to identify their character strengths.

Collaborating with a coach after taking the VIA test, however, offers several advantages. It allows for a deeper exploration and understanding of your strengths in the context of your personal and developmental goals. Working with a coach facilitates the translation of assessment results into actionable strategies, helping you apply your strengths in real-life situations.

Benefits of coaching

By identifying and understanding their unique character strengths, adolescents gain insight into their abilities and positive qualities, acquire a more positive self-image and develop resilience in the face of challenges. Character strengths coaching encourages and motivates them to pursue activities and interests that align with their values and to work towards personal and academic goals through specific goal-related action plans.

Young adulthood often comes with various challenges and transitions. By gaining a deeper understanding of their own strengths and unique qualities, young adults can make informed choices about career paths, relationships, and personal development, and are more likely to take on challenges and persevere in the face of setbacks.

Yes, coaching fulfills the Creativity component of CAS for the IB. Coaching allows for exploration, innovation of ideas, active participation, reflection on experiences to understand learning and growth, achieving specific goals like skill development and planning and initiating the steps towards goal accomplishment.

Coaching Sessions

The goals for adolescents and young adults can vary widely based on individual interests, values, and developmental stages. Categories of goals that adolescents and young adults may consider are:

  • Academic achievement
  • Personal Development
  • Health and Well-being
  • Career Advancement
  • Leadership Skills Development
  • Time Management
  • Digital Wellbeing
  • Social Relationships

While we understand the importance of parental involvement, our coaching sessions at rrCoaching are designed to create a confidential space for personal growth and self-expression for the adolescent. This process is only possible without the presence of the parent in the session. We do, though, highly encourage our adolescents to share information from our sessions with their parents.

Our privacy policy does not allow disclosure of any information shared with us to anyone. However, in situations where there is a risk of harm or danger to oneself or others, confidentiality may be breached to ensure necessary intervention and safety measures are taken.

A cycle of our coaching programme typically spans 10-12 sessions. This timeframe facilitates thorough exploration of goals, the application of strategies, and the fostering of sustained progress, all within the context of discovering and leveraging your unique character strengths.

We also offer the possibility of stand-alone individual sessions (90 min). One-off sessions are particularly beneficial when a goal is specific and well-defined. Our single sessions cater to immediate needs.

Our coaching sessions last approximately 50-60 minutes. At the beginning they are typically scheduled once a week. Starting with weekly sessions allows for a focused and intensive start, fostering a strong foundation, rapport, and addressing immediate goals. As progress unfolds, transitioning to sessions twice a month provides individuals with increased time for reflection, and the flexibility to integrate coaching insights into their lives. This balanced approach supports ongoing development while respecting individual time commitments, encouraging autonomy, and ensuring sustained progress

Our coaching sessions and workshops are offered in both English and Greek, allowing individuals to choose the language that best suits their comfort and preference.
